It is probably inevitable that you will have to deal with quitting your job at some point in your career. The best way to quit your job. Especially now, as the end of the year approaches and during the time of the #GreatResignation, you see many professionals opting for a new challenge. No matter how fun this new job is and how bored you may be with your current position, resigning is still a less-than-fun and sometimes tricky challenge. We listed some tips for you on how to quit positively and constructively.
Timing – when and how best to cancel
Give notice as long as possible before your notice period, or your next challenge starts. This way, you give your current employer more time to find a replacement for you, and you can finish your work correctly. Termination is best done in a face-to-face meeting with your manager. Afterward, confirm immediately by email what you discussed and when you will leave your employment.
Keep it positive
Keep je conversation positive. No matter how well you did in your position and what you accomplished, a final negative talk will be remembered for a long time. This will make it more difficult when you need a positive reference in the future and can create uncomfortable situations when you (potential) new colleagues or supervisor speak to your old employer. This is the best way to quit your job.
Prepare for a counteroffer
Be prepared for the possibility that your employer may offer a counteroffer to keep you on board. Of course, a counteroffer at a time when you would otherwise resign is more of a patch-up than a lasting solution. It is easier to deal with this if you prepare in advance and think about how best to respond.
Get references
Even if you already have your new job, reference are valuable for your professional future. In the last two weeks of your contract, ask your manager, colleagues, and other stakeholders to write a reference for you. Experience shows that this is best given while you are still in the picture. Tip: LinkedIn makes it easy to send a reference request.
Resigning can be difficult. Focus on quiting constructively and make sure you are remembered positively.
